American Southern cuisine at Larkin’s is not your usual comfort food you’d expect.
The owner’s of Mac N Cheeza of downtown LA, also own Larkin’s in Eagle Rock. After chatting with one of the managers or owners, I learned that Larkin’s was part of their restaurant universe. Being a sucker for comfort food, such as mac and cheese, I knew I had to make my way to Eagle Rock.
I cajoled Miss J to accompany me on this culinary adventure of Southern Foods. I would practically order everything they had on the menu including: fried Portabello mushrooms, fried chicken, mac’n cheese, meatloaf, collard greens, fried okra, and red beans & rice. I thoroughly enjoyed the mac’n cheese – which burnt my tongue, fried portabello mushroms, and the meatloaf. Unfortunately, I didn’t care for the fried chicken – with their own creative batter sans the chicken skin (i like my fried chicken with the skin), and the collard greens. I understand their take is part the Southern California (non-sense) healthier influence. But when you offer southern comfort food, I expect lard, deep fried, and chicken skin.
Anyways. . . it’ll be awhile before I consider trying Larkin’s again.
