There’s a small group of Shandong-nese that are not directly from China, but from Korea. In Taipei, there’s a small community, and they speak Mandarin, Shandong Hwa, and even Korean. It’s fascinating to understand so many languages and cultures.
Opened by Shandongense, Hanyang features traditional Korean BBQ cuisine. With the standard Korean BBQ grilling tables, gas powered, raw meats are cooked by the patrons. This interactive restaurant is common practice in Korea. It is actually a treat, since Korean don’t necessarily do this type of grilling at home, often. I find this manner appalling to my clothes. When you leave this type of restaurant, your clothes will continue to have this odor.
Tonight, Mr. J and I had non-DIY Korean entrees. We had Dolsot Bimbibap(돌솥비빔밥) – which is vegetables and rice with an egg on rice in a hot iron bowl. You mix everything together in the bowl and spread it around the sides of the bowl. The goal is to get the rice nice and crisp with the egg cooked amongst everything. You typically add some of the slightly spicy red sauce, with the consistency of ketchup, to at some heat. The crispy spoonfuls of this Korean version of fried rice is a nice treat. This used to be one of my favorite Korean dishes.
Kimchi Bokumbap ((김치복음밥) is one of my current favorite Korean dishes. Easy to make, all you need is rice, kimchi, an egg, and beef or pork. You fry everything together, except for the egg – which is done separately. Then you lay the egg fried, or scramble, on top. The kimchi brings out a reddish color the inspires my mouth to water. Greasy as it may be, it is so yummy. Westerners might find the consistency of this dish to be a bit mushy or a bit too wet. I would suggest that it is similar to that of mashed potatoes, a casserole, or mac’n cheese. It’s kinda funny, this dish wasn’t even on the menu, yet Hanyang was able to accommodate us for this simple dish. In fact, Mr. J throughly enjoyed this dish.
Bon Appetit! or 잘 먹겠습니다 (Jal Meokkesseumnida)…enjoy the pictures.
