A couple of years ago, Breeze Center started managing the Taipei Station’s 2nd floor food court. Their initiatives included an area devoted to the traditional Taiwanese Beef Noodle Soup, exotic cuisines from Middle East, Italy, Vietnam, and Korea, and an area of Bakeries, Cafes, and restaurants. My personal favorite area is the Taiwanese night market delicacies. Breeze brought in, from all over Taiwan, some of the most reknown night market street food vendors to this unique setting. It only seems natural, since the station, the main hub for the trains, subway, and high speed rail, bring everyone together to other destinations.
One of the more popular “stalls” is Tainan’s Hong Yutou Danzai Noodles (洪芋頭擔仔麵). Their famous noodles features shrimp and beef meat balls in a clear consume. Eaten not spicy, the flavor dervives from the soup.
I decided on a combination meal with Lu Ro Fan – braised pork on rice, with taiwanese sausage, egg, vegetables, and soup. This simple meal, doesn’t feature a large meat or protein, but rather a bunch of small dishes together. The braised pork rice is my new favorite “meat on rice” of the year. This hearty meal in itself is comparable to my past go-to meals, like Yoshinoya and Cha Sui Fan. The Taiwanese sausage and egg was quite tasty, as expected. For me, you really can’t mess up eggs. The pork sausage, with a texture tougher than Western sausage has more flavor and aroma. The soup and vegetables round out the meal. The clear broth, favored by Asians over heavy thick soups, is served hot and with big time flavor. Westerners would think Asian soups as just broths – rather than meals in a bowl. I would pick an Asian soup over a Western one any day.
Anyways . . . just writing about this place, makes me want to go back. Though I know my mom makes this meal almost every day.
