Japanese cuisine is not hard to find in Asia, specifically Taipei or Shanghai. I think it would be safe to say, since the 80′s – when Japan’s global reach was at its peak, culture, cuisine, and investments from the land of the rising sun. And, us non-Nippon’rs embraced this fascination with open arms. Many businessmen, not from Japan, opened up stores and restaurants to celebrate, or capitalize on this phenomenon.
This is a ground chicken ball, with a thick savory sauce. I wasn’t quite sure what it was in the beginning, but it turned out to be my favorite of the night. Notice the large egg yolk to mix.
Tanya Matabei, opened by a Hong Kongese, is one such restaurant striving to achieve authenticity in Yakitori style. With dark wood accents mimicking Japanese simplicity decor, Tanya Matabei is a 2 story restaurant in the Luwan District of Shanghai. But I should warn you about the the low doorway entrance requiring a limbo maneuver. I bumped my head, the first time, as I walked inside.
Check out these great mushrooms. When grilled, a natural sweetness comes out.
With a large sake bottle, the three us were ready for a feast. Though not an AYCE, which means all you can eat – similar to the cuisine from the Suzhou restaurant, I’d prefer quality standards over the quantity standards of an AYCE. At most AYCE restaurants, they are mostly known for their price and selection, not for quality of food.
I am not exactly sure they they had this Korean style friend rice hot pot. It was good, yet it kinda confused me. But I guess hot foods go together – like Yakitori and this fried rice.
We had many different types of skewers. Though most of them were either chicken or vegetables. We had chicken, chicken breast piecess, a large onion slice, mushroom, and other vegetables. The kid inside me likes the hard boiled then fried quail egg. I love eggs. One interesting item we had was the chicken cartilage.
The cartilage, which I think was chicken. I am used to small fried chicken cartilage, but this was a large piece.
To be frank, Tanya Matabei is decent, but not outstanding. There were some minor issues considering service or lack there of. In addition, some of the items were decent but nothing to brag about. The only thing that was exceptional was the ground chicken meat balls in the thick heavy savory sauce.
