Late Night Budaejeongol 부대전골 at 장독대김치찌개

Budaejeongol 부대전골 style of meal is common type of gathering in Asia. We see communal bowls, pots, dishes, and plates that people share in different cultures and cuisines. In China, hot pot is common and cause for celebration, in Japan Shabu Shabu is sometimes shared with a boiling cauldron, and in Korea – they seem to share everything.

Cold snowy winter nights is my deduction as to why Korean love spicy foods. I realize it helps keep them warm. But I am still trying to figure out why they still eat it on hot summer days. Perhaps the perspiration helps cool them off, as well.

After a night a festivities, our stomachs were grumbling for substance (since we had enough alcoholic liquids). Mr. J suggested to us that we try 장독대김치찌개, since it was open late. Plus, it was a bit tough to find a cab in this crazy snow storm weather. Come to think of it, it was freezing and we couldn’t find a cab for awhile.

Budaejeongol is . . .

popular dish with vegetables, tofu, instant noodles or macaroni, rice cake, sausage, and ham, all mixed in a water in a large commune shallow bowl. You can see influence with macaroni, sausage, and ham. You can add different spices to suit your taste – from curry, spicy, or regular. The rice cake dissolves somewhat to soak up the spices as well as thicken the water to form a gravy.

So 장독대김치찌개 we went and we had their speciality which was Budaejeongol 부대전골. Similar to Nolboo’s, except we had it more spicier and with more kimchi. I remember distinctly about the large non-flavored instant noodle ramen. In fact, they sell packaged non-flavored (without flavor packet) ramen for this specific purpose. The ramen has to been gobbled up fast or easy it becomes mushy from the soupy gravy.

One bonus that we had was the large egg omelet. This was really good. Yes, I am biased, I love eggs. But the large almost plain egg omelet is a good foil for the spicy Budaejeongol.
