꼬리곰탕 Ox Tail Soup at 진주집 – Final in The Seoul Series

Late night meals after drinking are great. You need them to help sober up, fill the hunger, and soothe your stomach. Hot soups are arguably the best things to remedy an alcohol fun filled night. 설렁탕 Seolleongtang Beef Soup or 꼬리곰탕 Ggori Gom-tang Ox Tail Soup will hit the spot.

진주집 features great Ggori Gom-Tang and Seolleongtang. Their crowded lunchtime crowds can get notoriously busy. Located in Namdaemun – Seoul’s South Gate, they are also open 24 hours for the late night drinking crowds. Late at night is when they stew the ox tail, tripe, and beef for hours on end. As we had our meal we saw the large cauldrons of soup cooking and the oxtail meat being prepared. You almost need a GPS device and map to find this place, situated in a small dark alley.

진주집 features all types of soups, but their most popular is the ox tail soup. They have all types of beef soups with tripe and other beef parts. There’s pictures of restaurant on TV and other media all over the wall.

The ox tail soup, raved by Mr. B, is one to behold. After large bowl of ox tail soup brought to your table, you take out the ox tail and separate the meat from the bone. Mr. K’s had a little help from the nice ladies who worked there. She skillfully separated the meat with forks and soon had a clean ox tail bone to show. Then, with your dipping sauce, of onions, spicy peppers, chili paste, soy sauce, and vinegar, you slather the dip with the meat and stuff your mouth. This savory, spicy, and vinegary taste accentuates the flavors of the beef. The ox tail was exceptional. The tender meat, which was falling apart effortlessly with forks, crumbles easily in your pie hole. The collagen and tendons were almost already cooked down into the soup, which gives the meat a tender texture. Ox tail is known to be quite heavy and hearty.

I choose to have the standard Seollontang, one of my favorite Korean dishes. I wanted a less hearty meal. But I think I choose un-wisely. The Seollontang, prepared the same way including the dipping sauce, was very good as well. The Seollontang and Ggori Gom-tang both are served with rice already inside the bubbling soup. I added a scoop of green onions, a dash of salt, and some chili paste to round out my soup, as did Mr. B and Mr. K with their ox tail soups.

Dipping & eating the beef and drinking the soup filled my hungry belly and made me a happy guy.

This was a great last meal in Seoul, though it was at 3 on a cold late night. I was glad I was finally able to have my Seollontang, but I kinda wish I had the ox tail soup.

What to Order: Ggori Gom-tang Ox Tail Soup
What not to Order: maybe not the Seollontang – which is very good already

Wow, you had it too. I am a frequent customer of 진주집 ever since I was a college student, and still whenever I have drinks around Namdaemun area (which covers Kwanghwamoon, Bookchangdong, Hoehyundong, Hoegidong, and Jongro), I stop by this place to soothe my stomache. :-)
