One of the things to see in Harbin during the winter months is the Snow Sculpture Festival. Along with the more famous Winter Ice Festival, the snow sculpture festival features many craftsman like structures.

Best seen during the day, there must have been over a hundred buildings and statues made by experts.

During the day it was about -20 Celsius, which is about -4 Fahrenheit.. . .NEGATIVE 4 and that’s in the sunlight. At night, it will get down to about -30 Celsius and -22 Fahrenheit. . . This particular day was no different. If I uncovered my hands, my face, and ears for longer than a minute, it would start to freeze and get painful. My ear would soon fall off, the snort in my nose would freeze from the inside, and my fingers would turn blue. On the first night, I had already started to question the idea of going on this trip. But after seeing the outdoor snow and ice sculpture, I began to think it was worth it.

After walking around for a bit, we saw this hugh man-made structure that had people climbing up on one side. As we got closer, we realized it was a large slide, where people would hike up with inflatable inner tubes. For 50 RMB each, we each got 2 rides down this awesome slide. It was really exhilarating, so much that Miss I was screaming all the way down. We even saw little kids running up to take their turns. We also saw a large inflatable ball that you could climb into and get rolled around in – for 100 RMB. I was about to try it myself, except I was getting a bit colder than I wanted to.

I’m kinda surprised not to see more news or reports on the Snow Sculpture festival. It is something not to be missed. The hard-packed snow will ensure that this festival will stick around at least till March.
