Barbecue is a backyard American tradition. The birthright of males, during summer weekends, can be tasted over barbecuing grills. Steaks, hot dogs, and chicken are skillfully torched. The popularity of traditional regional barbecue of beef brisket, pulled pork, and hot links can be seen butchered by amateur Barbecuists.

Now with Lucille’s and Wood Ranch, barbecue has been refined for the masses. Both Lucille’s and Wood Ranch offer fine barbecue for each of their target markets – with Lucille’s focusing on family’s and Wood Ranch with an upscale feel.

On this visit to The Grove’s Wood Ranch, my friends and I looked for a light lunch on this pleasant weekday. The large interior is nice for those pseudo power lunches from CBS studios. On this nice day, we choose to sit in the shady patio to enjoy the fresh LA air.

My friends had the BBQ chopped salad and the Chicken Cobb salad, while I choose the BBQ Tri-tip sliders with a side of mac and cheese and a Chicken Tortilla soup. The typical huge portion of salads was barely half finished. I must say that the BBQ chopped salad looked more appealing. But I wasn’t in the mood for salad. Since I hadn’t had much western food in China, I felt I need to satisfy my American-ness with some BBQ.

The tri-tip beef sliders had a nice sweet and tangy flavor absorbed into the shredded beef. The buns helped soak up the juicy goodness. The mac and cheese was better than expected, with all its gooey glory. I liked the cheesey American and cheddar flavors. It is a simple mac and cheese that isn’t complicated by fancy or nouveau recipes. It was a solid lunch that would want me to come back to try a full dinner.

I can’t figure out which looks better… that BBQ Sandwich or the Mac n Cheese!

Kevin – The mac n cheese was ordinary, but the BBQ sandwich was much better.

Shame about the Mac n Cheese. I think restaurants that serve this dish should sign a “Pledge” to always make it super tasty.
