The famed R&B and pop song from the ’70′s is immortalized at David Laris’ Funky Chicken, with the same name. This little chicken joint features rotisserie chicken customized with different sauces and sides. Funky Chicken, with its 1st floor location at Sinan Mansion, serves the take-out and delivery customers, along with a small dining area inside as well as outdoors.
The rotisserie chicken, slow cooked to retain the juiciness with the tenderness, was a huge trend in the late 90′s with Boston Market, Kenny Rogers, Koo Koo Roo, and LA’s Zankou Chicken. With this healthy alternative to fast food fried chicken and burgers, Funky Chicken also couples the tasty chicken with sauces – teriyaki, adobo and chipotle, citrus mediterranean, and tamarind BBQ. Funky Chicken also offers salads, chicken wings, fingers, and skewers. The accompanied sides of lemon pepper potatoes, garlic mashed potatoes, grilled shitake mushrooms, buttered corn, french fries, pickled vegetables, rice and gravy can complete the meal. Sandwiches, wraps, and soups may also complicate your choices. And they also have beer! – with sodas and other drinks.
I liked the spicy combination of adobe and chipotle with my chicken. The influence of latin and filipino flavors give the chicken a nice kick. I was also able to try the BBQ and the teriyaki. These dipping sauces allow interesting tastes, that you wouldn’t normally find with chicken. The large fries were also quite good. I didn’t get a chance to try the mashed potatoes or mushrooms, or rice and gravy.
Funky Chicken is a nice take-home dinner as well as a light and healthy alternative for the lunch time crowd. I like this simple concept with lower risks, since the chicken menu is simple, the prices are reasonable, with a healthy ingredients, and a memorable name.
