I could easily talk about the intimidating and great tasting Sichuan chicken which was crispy as well as spicy. Or the delicate flavors of the diced vegetables with ground pork. I might even mention about the savory julienned tofu bean curds. Tempted I am to discuss about the Chinese white wine Er Guo To, with 48% alcohol.
But I am here to talk about the duck. The Beijing Roasted Duck. None of that other stuff really matters. You don’t really care anything else. As you read this, it’s all about the duck. I could go on and on about the decor, but you’d skip down to the keyword – duck.
But without further ado, I present Duck King’s Beijing Roasted Duck 北京烤鴨. Even before we were served, I could smell and see the other ducks being served. As I walked to the restrooms to wash my hands, I could see the the large ovens with the hanging ducks on display, waiting to be roasted. I know I was salivating, almost as much as I write this now, while waiting for our ducks.
The presentation of the duck and the preparer emptied our table to crowd around this display of knife skill. He expertly sliced the duck skin apart from the duck, then going after similar juicy slices of meat. Soon, there were 2 good sized plates of skin and meat.
The skin has a great crispy texture with savoriness. The glistening oiliness was acceptable. I could imagine I could munch on little pieces of the skin, like pork rinds or potato chips. The meat was tender and had a little toughness. It was juicy, so the slight chew was acceptable. It was a great combination. With the little steamed pancake, you take a piece of the skin and meat and slather the sweet sauce – almost like a hoisin sauce, and add a little slices of scallions. The combination presents a nice sweet with refreshing mix of the vegetables and duck.
This national dish was so good, we decided to have another duck! Our group was large enough to have 2 ducks. I would never say that Shanghai has better roasted ducks than Beijing. But then again, I haven’t been to Beijing in awhile to argue otherwise. But Duck King in Shanghai, is good enough, so far for me and Shanghai.
