Ra-men Bankara, Bangkok

Trust in Mr. B. . . that’s what I kept saying. After being lead through traffic on motorcycle taxis, we had finally arrived. Just minutes ago, I was sweating bullets from the fear while riding riding the motorcycles, but now my perspiration from the ramen I was happily consuming in this hot summer heat in Bangkok. With the sights, sounds, flavors, and sensory overload, I just about worn out from this experience in Bangkok, after only 4 days. But it was just the start of a crazy night for us in Bangkok.

Just weeks ago, Mr. B had prepped us with his itemized itinerary for Thailand after our scheduled tours. Living in Singapore, didn’t deter his love for the Bangkok, so we confided in his judgement for places to go, things to do, and stuff to eat. Bankara was on that list for this late Saturday afternoon.

Located in the Japanese section on Sukhumvit Road Soi 39 of Bangkok, Bankara fit right in, next to the various other stores and restaurants. As we walked in, it looked like any other Japanese restaurant that I had been to. Yet, my expectations were high, since Mr. B was raving about it for days. Initially, I was actually a little disappointed, since I kinda wanted some local Thai food. But what the hell – trust in Mr. B. . .

I extended this mantra in letting him order. Heck, he lead us on these crazy motorcycle taxis, to after hour nightclubs, and other evil places – ramen was almost the least on my mind. When it, the Ibutamiso – miso ramen with pork, finally arrived, I was helpless at the mercy of this pipping hot bowl of yumminess. I do confess, I do really enjoy ramen – including the instant variety. I noticed on the table, that there was a small colander of garlic buds. I was like WOW!. I took a couple buds and used the press, right into the bowl. This was going to be great. And it was. Fresh garlic sprinkled in a bowl of ramen. I had garlic ramen in the US with large garlic cloves simmering in the broth, but this was different. This makes me want to keep garlic lying around just for some late night instant ramen binges. The chicken karate was fine, as well.

With my belly full, I felt like I won something – all due to Mr. B . . . Trust in Mr. B.

One of my classmates boasted about Bankara, as probably the best ramen house in Thailand

Cool little restaurant.

The garlic press for the ramen. I thought this was a great concept for fresh garlic.

  1. Mr. B

Mr. B here in the flesh. Jimmy, I’m glad you liked this place so much. There are so many other great restaurants like this one that I’d be happy to take you to the next time we are both in The Kok. For great Mexican, I recommend La Monita. For fantastic Thai, its Thong Kruen and Buritara. Sunday brunches at the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit and Four Seasons are amazing. The list goes on and on….
